HER STORY
50 Years Getting To The Heart Of The Problem
As a teenager, Joan was drawn to Outward Bound and experiential education — learning by doing, not by sitting in a classroom. That instinct led her, at twenty, into a rare combined bachelor’s-and-master’s counseling program. She stayed at the same institution to complete her PhD.
What’s followed hasn’t been a straight climb up a career ladder. It’s been two tracks running side by side for fifty years — private practice and teaching, at the same time, the whole way through. Staff psychologist at UCLA. Twelve years on faculty at USC. Now at Pepperdine. Ten of those years included service in the U.S. Air Force.
Somewhere across those parallel decades, she noticed what almost nobody else in the field was saying: the emotion people think is the problem is rarely the real one. That became the Rosenberg Reset™ — one choice, eight difficult feelings, ninety seconds.
THE REFRAME
She Doesn't Manage Symptoms. She Finds What's Underneath Them.
Neuroscience, psychodynamic theory, CBT, and humanistic-existential psychology — distilled into reframes clients never forget.
1.
“It’s not anxiety.”
It’s vulnerability. Naming the actual feeling changes what you can do about it.
2.
“It’s not imposter syndrome.”
It’s skills plus vulnerability — a completely different, and far more solvable, problem.
3.
“It’s not a speaking problem.”
It’s a difficulty with unpleasant feelings, wearing a speaking problem’s mask.
“No amount of convincing will convince.”
~ Dr. Joan Rosenberg

WHO CALLS HER
There is No ‘Six Degrees of Separation’
She’s just One or Two Degrees From Those in the Health, Entertainment and Entreprenuerial Spaces.
Not because she chased the networks — because the work brought them to her or intersected with her life in other ways.
BEYOND THE PRACTICE
Serious About the Work. Not Precious About Herself.
Ask anyone who knows her outside a client session: she’s quick-witted and genuinely playful. Pun fights with her family are a running tradition — and, she’ll tell you, they made her a better therapist. Hearing double and triple meanings in a joke is the same skill that lets her hear what a client isn’t quite saying yet.
