Happy New Year. Have you set goals for 2019?
One of my goals this year is to speak more so I can get the key messages in my book out to more people.
Yet, in the process of setting goals, we can get anxious about meeting them.
My book is chock full of strategies to help decrease anxiety and to help them move forward on their goals.
Here’s one approach from my new book, 90 Seconds to a Life You Love: How to Master Your Difficult Feelings to Cultivate Lasting Confidence, Resilience, and Authenticity that will help.
I call it the Resourcefulness Reset. Grab your journal or laptop to complete this exercise:
1. Write down three to five specific worries.
2. Choose one and allow your worry to play out to its logical conclusion. With your worry in mind, ask yourself, What’s the worst thing that would happen if my worry about the situation came to pass? Once you have the answer, ask yourself. If it did, then what? Keep asking these two questions until your worry can go no further.
3. Write out every answer you have to each round of those two questions.
4. Also write down the feelings you might experience if that event or situation occurred, as well as the resources you might need at each step of the way. Keep writing until you reach a sense of completion.
5. Then, read your initial worry and, one by one, read each of your responses. Visualize each response; see yourself effectively handle the situation, whether that involves your feelings, words, or actions.
6. Address the next worry in the same way. Once you make your way through the entire list, take a moment to check in with yourself to see if the intensity of your worry has diminished.
As you face life events and situations, remember that reducing your anxiety involves handling the emotions you’ll feel if something doesn’t go the way you wanted or expected it to.
What if you get frustrated? Or angry? Or disappointed? Or embarrassed?
When you start to believe you have the available resources—emotional or otherwise—to manage the situation, you act accordingly.
In my book, I’ll show you exactly how to experience and move through eight difficult feelings.
If you can do that, you can pursue anything you want.
